Tip of the Week

Tip 10: Stop squealing brakes

Fed up with squealing brakes? You will find that all that is usually needed is a bit of grease in the right place to resolve the squeal.

The squeal is usually caused by the pad vibrating against the piston. This vibration is magnified by the brake caliper causing the annoying high pitched squeal common to disc brakes.

So in order to stop the squeal you need to stop the vibration.

Remove the pads and give the area around the brake caliper and pistons a good clean. A toothbrush makes a useful tool.

useful for cleaning around disc brakes

Using a grease gun, carefully put a squirt of grease on the back of each pad. It is important to be very careful here and look out where you put those greasy fingers because you don't want to get any grease on the front of the pad i.e. the braking surface

carefully grease the back of each pad

Replace the pad and the grease will now form a layer between pad and piston removing the vibration. Simple! I am taking this opportunity to replace the pads but this works without having to renew the pads too.
